The Day of the Lord and the Second Coming
The Day of the Lord is a period
of divine judgment and restoration, culminating in Christ’s Second Coming and
millennial reign. This page outlines its events, aligning with a pre-wrath
rapture view (adopted June 3, 2025), where the rapture and Mount of Olives
appearance occur post-tribulation but before God’s full wrath. Scriptures like
D&C 45, 88, 133, Revelation 6–16, and Matthew 24:29–31 guide this timeline,
emphasizing the Mount
of Olives as
part of the global Second Coming.
Cosmic Signs: The Sixth Seal (Revelation 6:12–17; Matthew 24:29; D&C 45:42)
After the Great Tribulation
(3.5 years, Daniel 12:11), cosmic signs mark the Day of the Lord’s
onset: the sun darkens, the moon turns to blood, stars fall (Joel 2:31; Revelation 6:12; Matthew 24:29). An earthquake
accompanies the sixth seal (Revelation 6:12; D&C 88:87), signaling God’s wrath
(Revelation 6:17).
Rapture of the Righteous (D&C 45:45; 88:96;
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)
Post-tribulation, Celestial
saints (living and dead) are caught up to meet Christ (D&C 88:96; Matthew
24:31). This pre-wrath rapture spares them from the Day of the Lord’s
judgments. Only those qualifying for the Celestial Kingdom, including those who
would have accepted the gospel (D&C 137:7–8), are raptured. Terrestrial beings abide the day (D&C
63:20–21), while Telestial beings face destruction
(Malachi 4:1).
Mount of Olives Appearance (D&C 45:48; Zechariah 14:3–5)
Christ sets His foot on the Mount of Olives, splitting it to deliver the Jews from a Jerusalem siege (D&C 45:48; Zechariah 14:4).
The Jews recognize Him as the Messiah (D&C 45:51–53; Zechariah 12:10). This
event, likely broadcast globally via modern media, is part of the Second Coming
in glory (D&C 45:44–45; Matthew 24:27), not a separate appearance, due to
its visibility and D&C 45’s sequence.
Great and Marvelous Work (1 Nephi 14:7, 17)
The GMW, God’s work to gather Israel and restore truth (1 Nephi 14:12–14), culminates in the Day of the Lord’s
wrath (v. 17). It includes the Restoration and missionary efforts, overlapping
with the tribulation and Second Coming, preparing the earth for Christ’s reign.
Judgments and Plagues (Revelation 8–16; D&C
133:46–51)
The Day of the Lord’s wrath
unfolds through seven trumpets and plagues:
- Trump/Plague 1: Hail, fire, and blood burn a third of trees and grass; sores
afflict those with the beast’s mark (Revelation 8:7; 16:2; D&C 29:16).
- Trump/Plague 2: A third of the sea becomes blood, killing sea life and
destroying ships; all sea life dies in the plague (Revelation 8:8–9;
16:3).
- Trump/Plague 3: Wormwood poisons rivers, killing many; rivers turn to blood
(Revelation 8:10–11;
16:4–7).
- Trump/Plague 4: Sun, moon, and stars darkened; sun scorches men (Revelation 8:12; 16:8–9).
- Woe 1/Trump 5: Locusts torment the unrighteous for five months (Revelation
9:1–11; 16:10–11).
- Woe 2/Trump 6: 200 million horsemen slay a third of men; Euphrates dries up, preparing for Armageddon (Revelation 9:13–21; 16:12–16).
- Woe 3/Trump 7: Kingdoms become Christ’s; final plagues and earthquake strike
(Revelation 11:14–19; 16:17–21).
These judgments cleanse the
earth, binding the great church (D&C 88:94) and preparing for the
Millennium.
Christ’s Appearance in Red Apparel (D&C
133:46–48)
After the cleansing, Christ
appears in red garments, symbolizing His atonement and judgment (D&C
133:48; Isaiah 63:1–3). This marks the transition to the millennial reign
(Revelation 20:4).
Fate of Terrestrial Beings
Terrestrial beings (honorable
but not valiant, D&C 76:71–75) abide the day, living through the cleansing
(D&C 63:20–21), or are resurrected later to join the Millennium (D&C
88:99). Telestial beings are burned (D&C
101:24–25; Malachi 4:1), while Celestial saints are raptured.
Conclusion
The Day of the Lord follows the
tribulation with cosmic signs, the rapture, and the Mount of Olives appearance as part of the Second Coming
(D&C 45:44–48). Judgments and plagues cleanse the earth, culminating in
Christ’s red-clad appearance and millennial reign. The GMW supports this by
gathering Israel. Prepare through faith and righteousness
(D&C 43:20). For further analysis of the Mount of Olives, see Math24_23.htm.
